Once again this year, an information evening on dealing with new media was held in the WvSG assembly hall for interested parents of Years 5 and 6. At the beginning, Emma, a member of our media scouts team, presented the work of the media scouts at our school and gave an insight into the popular Snapchat app.
Mr. Osterkamp, speaker of the evening and employee of the Protestant Youth Welfare Rhede, then invited all parents to reflect on their own usage behavior and knowledge of new media with the help of anonymous live polls.
The presentation then discussed various apps frequently used by children and young people and pointed out the dangers and control options. The issue of cybergrooming in particular is becoming an ever greater danger in social networks and chat rooms. Our media scouts also regularly carry out educational work in class 7 in this area.
Much of this information and also setting options for various apps can also be found on the internet (e.g. at www.medien-kindersicher.de). However, the first step towards a healthy approach to media in the family is and remains talking about media and media consumption, i.e. staying in contact with your child and taking an interest in their world of media!
